Mass customization is a marketing and manufacturing technique that combines the flexibility and personalization of custom made products with the low unit costs associated with mass production. While many companies are responding with temporary fixes to get e-commerce packages out the door, process disruptions and a high rate of returns are compromising profitability. The report's findings include three major areas of concerns:
1. Finding automated solutions to mass customization, especially e-commerce, is the greatest challenge.
2. When it comes to equipment, smaller runs necessitating faster changeovers is the greatest challenge.
3. Perhaps most perplexing for Vision 2025 participants is that when it comes to automation, the availability of a skilled workforce is often cited as the greatest challenge.
